Who we are

Aheri is a dating website for adults in Kenya. We are responsible for the personal data described here. Contact us at support@aheri.co.ke.

What we collect

  • Your email address and password (stored in hashed form, never in plain text).
  • Your date of birth, used to confirm you are 18 or older and to show your age.
  • Your profile: display name, gender, town or city, what you are looking for, bio, interests, prompt answers and photos.
  • Your choices about who you would like to meet (gender and age range).
  • Your likes, passes, matches, blocks and the messages you send.
  • Reports you make, and reports made about you.
  • Verification: a live selfie you take on request, the pose we asked for, and the result of the check.
  • Basic technical and security information needed to run the service.

We never ask for your exact location, and we never collect it.

Sensitive information

Some of what you give us can be sensitive, including who you are interested in, and a photo used to check your identity. We treat it with extra care:

  • Who you want to see is private. Other members and the public never see it. It is only used to decide whose profiles appear for you.
  • Your date of birth is private. Only your age is shown to others.
  • Verification selfies are optional to join, but required to like, match and chat. We ask for your separate consent before you submit one. A person at Aheri compares it with your profile photos, and then the selfie file is deleted. We keep the result (verified or not) and the date. We do not build or store face templates.

Why we use it

  • To create your account, build your profile and show it to people you may like.
  • To suggest compatible people and let matched members message each other.
  • To keep the service safe: verification, moderation, handling reports, preventing abuse and fraud.
  • To meet legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.

We use your data because you asked us to run your account, because you gave your consent (for verification and for the sensitive information you choose to share), and because we have a genuine need to keep Aheri safe.

Who sees your information

  • Other members see only your display name, age, town, approved photos, what you are looking for, bio, interests, prompts and Verified badge.
  • Our moderators can see reports, the photos and selfies under review, and, only when a report includes them, the last 30 messages of a reported chat. Their actions are logged. They do not browse private chats.
  • Service providers that process data for us: Supabase (database, accounts and file storage), and the email and hosting services we use to send you emails and run the website. Some of them store data outside Kenya, so your data may be transferred abroad. We only use providers that commit to protecting it.
  • Authorities, only where the law requires it, for example under a valid court order.

We do not sell your personal data.

How long we keep it

  • Verification selfies: deleted when the review is finished.
  • Photos, profile and messages: until you delete them or your account.
  • Reports and moderation records: kept while they are needed to keep the community safe, and deleted when the account they relate to is deleted.
  • Backups: copies of deleted data may remain in routine backups until they are overwritten.

Your rights

Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019, you can:

  • Access your data. Download it any time from Settings, Account and data.
  • Correct it. Edit your profile in Settings.
  • Delete it. Delete your account from the same page. Your profile, photos and messages are removed.
  • Withdraw consent for verification by contacting us, and object to or ask us to restrict how we use your data.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) in Kenya.

Security

Connections are encrypted. Photos and selfies are stored privately and shown through short-lived links. Access to moderation tools is limited to named staff and logged. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach puts you at risk, we will tell you and the ODPC as the law requires.

Age limit

Aheri is for people aged 18 and over. If you believe someone under 18 is using it, report their profile or email us and we will act quickly.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
